*Traction Man by Mini Grey 2005
'Traction Man' is a super-hero action figure who, along with his faithful dog-like companion 'Scrubbing Brush', embark in daring-do adventures concocted from every-day items around the house. Of course Action Man has a perfectly coordinated outfit for every occasion, until a fashion crisis eventually saves the day. Grey's creativity is contagious and showcases the master storyteller's ability to weave ideas and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary . . . or in this case the SUPER ADVENTURESOME.

WORD CHOICE

Please post your favorite books which best illustrate WORD CHOICE!

*The Boy Whol Loved Words by Shotter and Potter 2006
"An inspiring choice for young wordsmiths and anyone who cherishes the variety and vitality of language."-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal. Some people collect pottle caps or stamps, but young Selig collects and savors words. The lyrical prose, magical realism and unique characters (like a Yiddish Genie) avidly parade the power developed from a passion for words!
Random House has a page with lesson plans for this book.

*Carmine: A Little More Red by Melissa Sweet 2005
"Melissa Sweet said that trying to write this, her first book, was initially like walking around the Library of Congress. But then a love of words (like pluck, dawdle, trouble, and viola) took over." (Book Jacket). This mixed-medium collage-style book recounts the fractured fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Unusal words which add punch and drama to the story are enlarged and intwined in the illustrative style. These words would be excellent to manipulate . . . remove, replace and emphasize. Here are a few terrific snippits.

"Some people DILLY-DALLY once in a while, but Carmine made a habit of it. Carmine's mother reminded her to go directly there, please. No dawdling."

"Most wolves practice the fine art of LURKING"

USUALLY the neightbors are home and would have heard Granny's cry for help.

Fine Examples!

Are there any students who would like to share some of their writing? Please sent a comment! We'd love to see anything that you are working on. If you have an example of writing that focuses on just one of the traits, that would be wonderful! If you have a finished piece where you've polished ALL SIX TRAITS, that would be wonderful as well.

Send them over!

Comments from teachers?
